Diocese of Meru

The Catholic Diocese of Meru is a faith based organization that covers the twelve administrative districts of the former larger Meru namely Tharaka North, Tharaka South, Meru south, Maara, Imenti South, Imenti Central, Imenti North, Buuri, Tigania East, Tigania West, Igembe North and Igembe South.

The diocese has two arms which are headed by Bishop Rt. Rev Salesius Mugambi with the first being the pastoral arm which ensures the spiritual nourishment and the second being the social development arm (Caritas Meru) which takes charge of community development aspects.

The diocese of Meru established the social development wing (Caritas Meru) to compliment the pastoral work in providing development services to the poor with the aim of improving livelihood of the people. “Social Development Office has the mandate of proclaiming social gospel, by supporting the communities in their development journey in a sustainable way with special emphasize to the poor and the marginalized, just as Jesus emphasized on social ministry when he healed the sick, and fed the hungry.”- BISHOP MUGAMBI

Caritas Meru is a member of Caritas Internationalis; Thanks to the immediate Caritas Director,now Honorable member of parliament and the 2002 UN Person of the year Mr. Joseph M’Eruaki M’Uthari, Caritas Meru is actualizing the vision of fighting persistent inhuman poverty and other social injustices in the society. The In its quest to fulfill its responsibility, the diocese has numerous successful projects that support communities such as water, health, agriculture, support to poor families and persons with disabilities, Micro finance programs to encourage savings and investment culture in our communities

“We have developed a five year strategic plan that will ensure articulate coordination and deliverance of the various projects under the caritas umbrella, moreover, the strategic plan which lays out our objectives and expectations will help us work towards achieving common goals.”- Abraham Maruta,Assistant Caritas Director.

Head of programs Mr Robert Gichunge believes that caritas is playing a vital role in promoting the social economic development especially through sustainable agriculture and Agri enterprise development in the marginalized areas of the diocese. “This will eventually create self reliance and improve productivity hence alleviating poverty through improved livelihood.”he says.
